Rescue Me ID: 17-12-05-00062Smokey Joe (male)

Alaskan Malamute Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Smokey Joe is a 2017 Home for the Holidays dog. This will Joe's 5th Christmas in our care. He first was adopted from the shelter as a tiny furry puppy in 2012 and was returned in May of 2013. He has waited the longest of any dog ever in our care to have a home. Joe has overcome issues resulting from bad treatment and he has developed issues as a result of kennel confinement and a suppression of his spirit for such a long time. Joe's videos show the great love he has for the caretakers who have earned his trust and total devotion. When in their presence he is joyous and will engage in puppyish behavior which brings a smile to everyone ... (Read More)observing. We hold on to hope that there is someone who will understand Joe's needs and give him the time to regain that lost innocence of the puppy he once was and to provide a happy contented life as a beloved companion. Joe is 6 years old and is a strong 78 pound German Shepherd mix. We are seeking an adult only household with secure fencing. He had a female companion in the play yards until she was adopted so potential homes with dogs will be assessed with the adopter. He has been uninterested in the office cats. Smokey Joe's fee has been subsidized by a sponsor to $25. He is neutered, fully vaccinated and tested free of heart worms. Application can be submitted online at our website: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/'|/dog-adopti'|/ or at the shelter. Adoption policies/application procedures are detailed under All Adoptable Animals. Adoption of all dogs/cats requires an approval process to ensure that they are going into a home suitable for their needs and committed to their care and safety. Each is placed with same due diligence that they would be given if they were our own furry family members. Adopters who are not within the local area of the shelter MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. Meeting approved adopters is one of the final steps in the adoption process. We do not permit transport or shipping of our residents without the adopter. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter which provides quality care, spay/neuter-all vaccines, deworming, vet exam, standard disease testing and for dogs-monthly heart worm prevention treatment. Resident animals are owner relinquished and also accepted from local Animal Control. The shelter is not permitted by GA law to accept strays. The facility is usually operating at capacity with a list of animals approved for intake waiting for space to open. Adoption hours are Tues-Sat 10-4 and Sun 1-4. PIease Read Before Adopting an Alaskan Malamute in Georgia
Alaskan Malamute Dogs can make good pets in Georgia if they match your IifestyIe. The Alaskan Malamute is an extremely friendly, large breed. Alaskan Malamutes are wonderful with older children. Alaskan Malamutes like to roam outside and need a large yard or acreage. Fences should be high with a buried base, since Alaskan Malamutes like to dig and can get out easily. The Alaskan Malamute is rowdy as a puppy but calms down as an adult dog. Human companionship is important as Alaskan Malamutes can get into trouble and ruin property if not given enough attention. Alaskan Malamutes need to be socialized with children and other dogs at an early age. Alaskan Malamutes, especially males, can be very dominant and may fight with other dogs if not exposed to them when young.
