Rescue Me ID: 14-07-24-00441Koda (male)

Alaskan Malamute Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Female Dogs Only, Not Good with Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

We recently rescued Koda from a family who no longer wanted him, in part, due to not knowing much about this breed and lack of training from a puppy to present. Koda has been allowed to grow without anyone in the household to show dominance and provide him with the proper training. He is very intelligent and very trainable. He just needs someone that has the necessary time to train him properly with knowledge of Alaskan Malamutes. We are in the process of training him but due to our work schedules we cannot devote the amount of time needed for him. We are interested in providing a good home for him and will be very discerning in choosing ... (Read More)the right match for him. Koda will do well in an environment where he has room to roam. If interested please call to discuss further. (Less)

Alaskan Malamute    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Female Dogs Only, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

My family rescued Bear from our county's humane society 4/19. A previous foster mom had said Bear is good with cats. Unfortunately, while he's not attacked our two cats he just can't leave them alone. One is stressed out to the point he's losing fur and staying in one room in the house. Bear is 100% current on everything. We've had him into our family vet (Animal Wellness Hospital) a couple times. He had a growth above his right eye that we ended up having removed as he often would scratch it open while cleaning and make it sore and bleed. That is all healed. We're being told by two vets that he's somewhere between 8 and 10 years of age. So ... (Read More)he's a relatively older fellow who's got some hearing and sight loss. He gets eye drops each night as he doesn't produce enough tears. He has never gotten into anything in the house that he shouldn't. No chewing problems or accidents. He sits, lays down, shakes and can speak on command - most of the time. :) When you're sitting and call him over he will sit down by you and put one of his paws on your lap on his own. He LOVES walks. I would say we walk an average of 2-3 miles each day. We've not had him off of his leash just because there's always so many kids and other pets and animals around that I worry he will run off chasing something. Since he's a malamute he doesn't think twice of trying to dart after a rabbit if he spots one. He's been good around all people including most kids. The only time when he may growl a bit is when small kids about his height run up to him excited to pet him. He's never shown teeth that I've seen. He just growled and backed up telling me it's time to go. Again, he's a great fellow that just needs a home with no cats. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting an Alaskan Malamute in Ohio
Alaskan Malamute Dogs can make good pets in Ohio if they match your IifestyIe. The Alaskan Malamute is an extremely friendly, large breed. Alaskan Malamutes are wonderful with older children. Alaskan Malamutes like to roam outside and need a large yard or acreage. Fences should be high with a buried base, since Alaskan Malamutes like to dig and can get out easily. The Alaskan Malamute is rowdy as a puppy but calms down as an adult dog. Human companionship is important as Alaskan Malamutes can get into trouble and ruin property if not given enough attention. Alaskan Malamutes need to be socialized with children and other dogs at an early age. Alaskan Malamutes, especially males, can be very dominant and may fight with other dogs if not exposed to them when young.

An Alaskan Malamute belonging to George Lucas was responsible for making the noises that inspired Chewbacca's vocal sounds in Star Wars. Alaskan Malamutes are still used as sled dogs for personal transportation and competitive mushing. The howl of an Alaskan Malamute is virtually indistinguishable from that of a wolf.
