He knows basic commands, and is great around children and other animals. He can be a little aggressive during play, but will never bite or harm anybody. Has no problem coming up to you to try and play when he's bored or when he needs to go out. He rarely barks and does not howl. He sheds (like all Malamutes) and requires some brushing every once and a while. http://youtu.be/8WWHJ9VO_rM

Animal ID: LukaLuka (male)

Alaskan Malamute    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Luka is our Georgia boy. He is a sweet, 1 year old long coat Alaskan Malamute. Luka LOVES people, is awesome with older children, is wonderful with other dogs and is cat tolerant. He is great on a leash and is crate trained and house broken and knows how to sit. Luka does suffer from separation anxiety. It appears Luka may have spent a significant amount of time on a chain. He had an embedded collar (the scar is visible around his neck)and is missing a few teeth. He is terrified of being on a tie out and MUST have a fenced yard (no electric fences, zip lines, or tie outs). He does very well when crated if you are away from the house, ... (Read More)but can be destructive if left loose when no one is home. If the family is home, he is perfectly content. We are working with Luka to help overcome this anxiety because he is a wonderful dog in every other capacity. Luka has been going to the groomer and day care regularly to help with desensitization and he is doing well. He LOVES to ride in the car and go on outings with the family. He is a great traveler and would be wonderful in a home where he could go on family vacations. He has wonderful house, leash and people manners but is still a little collar shy. We are requiring that his new home be a malamute experienced home because the breed has some special quirks. We are a 501(c)3 Rescue operating in the VA, MD, DC, and WV areas - with the ability to adopt out of state. A copy of our adoption application can be found on our website - www.openheartsrescue.org. Please fill out and forward via email to openheartsrescue@yahoo.com. Meet and greets are only scheduled after an approved application is received. The adoption fee on our dogs is $125.00. We are a foster-based, volunteer organization and answer all emails as quickly as we can. Thank you for your interest in one of our great dogs! (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting an Alaskan Malamute in Virginia
Alaskan Malamute Dogs can make good pets in Virginia if they match your IifestyIe. The Alaskan Malamute is an extremely friendly, large breed. Alaskan Malamutes are wonderful with older children. Alaskan Malamutes like to roam outside and need a large yard or acreage. Fences should be high with a buried base, since Alaskan Malamutes like to dig and can get out easily. The Alaskan Malamute is rowdy as a puppy but calms down as an adult dog. Human companionship is important as Alaskan Malamutes can get into trouble and ruin property if not given enough attention. Alaskan Malamutes need to be socialized with children and other dogs at an early age. Alaskan Malamutes, especially males, can be very dominant and may fight with other dogs if not exposed to them when young.

An Alaskan Malamute belonging to George Lucas was responsible for making the noises that inspired Chewbacca's vocal sounds in Star Wars. Alaskan Malamutes are still used as sled dogs for personal transportation and competitive mushing. Alaskan Malamutes are often mistaken for Siberian Huskies. Alaskan Malamutes are so friendly that they do not make good guard dogs. The howl of an Alaskan Malamute is virtually indistinguishable from that of a wolf.
